Ferries leave every hour on the hour from Red Hook at a cost of $8.15 per person, children under 12 years are $1. Transportation to the Red Hook ferry dock is readily available via taxi. Rates vary from $6 to $23 per person (ask price prior to departure) depending upon how far away from Red Hook you are.
Once on St. John, take a taxi out to Trunk Bay at cost of $9 per person ($12 if only one person) and at Trunk Bay you will meet your guide behind the snorkel rental shop. The Virgin Islands National Park charges a $5 per person (kids under 16 free) entrance fee, this fee stays in the park to maintain the facilities (showers, restrooms, trails, etc.).
Due to difficulty parking at Trunk Bay, the following option is not recommended. If you have a rental car on St. Thomas, you can take the car ferry over to St. John (make sure it is okay with the rental agency). This costs $65 round trip. This ferry takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get to St. John. There are two to three different companies so check their schedules as tickets are not interchangeable. This can save a lot of money for families, but the car barges are often unreliable so give yourself plenty of time. Keep in mind, everyone wants to get to St. John early, and everyone wants to leave on the last car barge so expect lines and waiting.
